Roman UrduAlhamdulillah / Al-hamdu lillah

Pronunciation: al-HAM-du-lil-LAH. The “h” in hamd is a soft breath (ح), and the “llah” is held slightly longer.

Common spellings: Alhamdulillah, Alhamdolillah, Al hamdulillah and Alhamdullilah all refer to the same phrase. The correct Arabic is الْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ.

What does Alhamdulillah mean?

“Alhamdulillah” is made of three parts:

  • al- – “the”, making the praise complete and total
  • hamd – praise given with love and gratitude, not just compliment
  • lillah – “for Allah”

Together: all praise, in every form, belongs to Allah. It is the second verse of Surah Al-Fatiha (Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil ‘alameen – “All praise is for Allah, Lord of all the worlds”), which every Muslim recites in each unit of salah.

It differs from Shukran (thank you, said to people) and from MashAllah (said when admiring a blessing). Alhamdulillah is thanks directed to Allah alone.

When do Muslims say Alhamdulillah?

  • After good news – a job, a baby, a recovery, exam results
  • After eating or drinking – the Sunnah is to praise Allah when the meal is finished
  • After sneezing – the one who sneezes says “Alhamdulillah”, and the reply is “Yarhamuk-Allah”
  • In salah – in Surah Al-Fatiha, and in the tasbih after prayer (33 times)
  • In hardship – many say “Alhamdulillah ‘ala kulli haal”, all praise to Allah in every condition
  • In everyday speech – as a natural reply to “kaise ho?” (“how are you?”)

Shukar Alhamdulillah – what it means

شکر الحمد للہ (“shukar Alhamdulillah”) is a common Urdu phrase combining shukar (gratitude) with Alhamdulillah. It carries the sense of “thanks be to Allah, all praise is His.” People use it when something they were worried about turns out well.
