The 6 Kalmas (چھ کلمے) are six short Arabic declarations every Muslim child in Pakistan learns by heart. The first and most recited is the Kalima Tayyaba (کلمہ طیبہ) – the declaration of faith. Kalima Tayyaba is the one most commonly requested as a neon sign or DP because it is the core declaration of faith (shahadah).
What does Kalima Tayyaba mean?
The Kalima Tayyaba has two parts joined together:
- La ilaha illallah – “there is no god but Allah”, the foundation of Tawheed (Allah's oneness)
- Muhammad-ur Rasoolullah – “Muhammad ﷺ is the messenger of Allah”, accepting his prophethood
Saying it with belief and understanding is the shahadah, the first pillar of Islam – the declaration that makes a person a Muslim.
When is the Kalima recited?
- In salah – during tashahhud, sitting in every prayer
- At the time of conversion – reciting it with sincere belief is how a person enters Islam
- Daily remembrance (zikr) – many recite it as tasbih throughout the day
- Taught to children – usually the first Arabic words a Muslim child in Pakistan memorises
- At the time of death – Muslims are encouraged to have the kalima be among their last words

What is the first Kalima called?

How many kalmas are there in Islam?
