| Urdu | ماشاءاللہ |
| Roman Urdu | MashAllah / Masha'Allah |
| English meaning | What Allah has willed |
| Urdu meaning | جو اللہ نے چاہا |
Pronunciation: ma-sha-AL-lah. Said as one flowing phrase, not three separate words.
Common spellings: MashAllah, Masha Allah, Masha'Allah and Mashallah all refer to the same phrase. The correct Arabic is مَا شَاءَ اللَّٰهُ.
What does MashAllah mean?
"MashAllah" is made of three parts:
- ma – "what"
- sha'a – "has willed / has wished"
- Allah – Allah
Together: "what Allah has willed [has happened/exists]." It is said upon seeing or hearing something good, as a reminder that every blessing – beauty, health, success, wealth – happens only because Allah willed it, not by one's own power alone. Many also say it to ward off envy (nazar) when praising something.
When do Muslims say MashAllah?
- Admiring a baby or child – one of the most common uses, said to bless rather than envy
- Praising someone's achievement – exam results, a promotion, a new business
- Seeing a beautiful home, car or possession – acknowledging it as Allah's blessing
- Complimenting appearance – said instead of a plain compliment, to guard against the evil eye
- Good news in general – any moment of admiration or gratitude for someone else's blessing
