Common spellings: Eid Mubarak, Eid Mubarik and Id Mubarak all mean the same thing. In Pakistan Eid ul-Adha is also called Bakra Eid or Bari Eid, and Eid ul-Fitr Choti Eid or Meethi Eid.
What does Eid Mubarak mean?
Eid (عید) means a festival or celebration that returns every year, and Mubarak (مبارک) means blessed. Together, Eid Mubarak is a wish for a blessed Eid – the same pattern as Ramadan Mubarak and Jummah Mubarak.
The two Eids in Islam
- Eid ul-Fitr – the festival of breaking the fast, on the 1st of Shawwal, the day after Ramadan ends. Sadaqat ul-Fitr (fitrana) is given before the Eid prayer, and the night before is Chand Raat, when families shop, put on mehndi and exchange Eidi.
- Eid ul-Adha – the festival of sacrifice, on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah during Hajj, remembering Prophet Ibrahim's (AS) readiness to sacrifice for Allah. Families who can afford it offer qurbani and share the meat with relatives and people in need.
Both Eids begin with the Eid prayer in congregation, then visits to family, new clothes, Eidi for children and plenty of food. Their dates follow the moon, so they come about 11 days earlier each year; in Pakistan the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee announces the date.
How to reply to Eid Mubarak
- Khair Mubarak (خیر مبارک) – "blessings to you too", the most common reply in Pakistan.
- Aap ko bhi Eid Mubarak (آپ کو بھی عید مبارک) – "Eid Mubarak to you too".
- Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum (تَقَبَّلَ اللّٰهُ مِنَّا وَمِنْكُمْ) – "may Allah accept from us and from you", the Eid greeting reported from the Companions.
